India Passport Photo Maker
An Indian passport photo must be 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm) on a plain white background, following the ICAO Doc 9303 standard that Passport Seva made mandatory from September 2025. This replaced the older 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) square, which is now the single most common reason applications get rejected. Our free tool crops to the exact size directly in your browser.

Official India passport photo requirements
Passports in India are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs through the Passport Seva network of PSKs and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, and the mPassport Seva app. Since the September 2025 switch to ICAO Doc 9303, the accepted photo is 35 × 45 mm — the older square format is no longer valid.
The background must be plain white, not off-white or cream, with the face filling about 80–85% of the frame from chin to crown. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes clearly visible, and avoid glasses that cause glare. The photo should have been taken within the last six months so it reflects your current appearance.

Getting the digital size right for online applications
When you apply through the Passport Seva portal or mPassport app, the upload is typically a JPEG around 630 × 810 pixels under 250 KB. For a printed 35 × 45 mm photo, 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI is the baseline. Because a passport photo is a sensitive biometric image, our tool resizes and crops it entirely on your device — the file never leaves your phone or computer.

Frequently asked questions
Does India still accept the old 2×2 inch passport photo?
No. Since September 2025, Passport Seva requires the 35 × 45 mm ICAO size. Submitting the old 51 × 51 mm square is now the top rejection reason.
Can I wear glasses in an Indian passport photo?
It is best to remove them. Frames must not cover your eyes and lenses must have no glare or tint; plain glasses are risky and often cause rejection.
What background color does Passport Seva require?
Plain white only. Off-white, cream and light gray are explicitly rejected under the current ICAO-aligned rules.
