Official eCitizen requirements

Kenya's e-Passport is applied for through the eCitizen portal, managed by the Directorate of Immigration Services. The uploaded photo follows the 35 × 45 mm standard with a plain white background that is uniform and shadow-free, with no patterns, textures or objects.

The face is a frontal view with a neutral expression, and both ears should be visible where possible. The face should occupy about 70-80% of the photo. Glasses are not permitted, sunglasses and tinted lenses are always prohibited, and only religious head coverings are allowed. The photo must be taken within the last six months.

Getting the digital size right

For the eCitizen e-Passport upload, export a JPEG at 413 × 531 pixels and 300 DPI for the 35 × 45 mm format. Note that basic eCitizen account registration uses a smaller 207 × 207 pixel photo, so do not confuse the two uploads.

Our tool crops to the Kenyan ratio, sets a shadow-free white background, and outputs a JPEG ready for eCitizen — all in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device, which keeps a sensitive document image private.
